| The Way of Philosophy “Philosophy,” from the Greek philos, friend, or, lover, and sophia, wisdom, the “of” between them being understood. Philosophy therefore is the love of wisdom. A philosopher is one who loves wisdom. No more. No less. The Eastern Church referred to this as Hagia Sophia, “Holy Wisdom,” and understood it to be an expression of the Trinity. “O come thou wisdom from on high and order all things far and nigh.” -O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (ancient Christian hymn) Holy wisdom is God the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity, the principle of divine self- revelation, divinity being understood at least to mean the experience of a sacred aspect of reality, known to humans across time and culture though called by different names. A friend or lover of wisdom, loves the one, unending, deathless, changeless reality in which “we live and move and have our being.” (or not) ©2007, John Cunyus All Rights Reserved www.JohnCunyus.com |
