What was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we examined and our hands have touched, concerning life’s word –
and life was made known, and we have seen, and bear witness, and announce eternal life to you, which was with the Father and has appeared to us –
what we have seen and heard we announce also to you, that you also may have communion with us, and our communion may be with the Father, and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
And this is the announcement that we have heard from Him, and we tell to you: That God is light, and there are no shadows at all in Him.
If we say that we have communion with Him and walk in shadows, we lie and do not work truth.
But if we walk in light as He is in light, we have communion with one another, and His Son Jesus’ blood cleanses us from every sin.
If we say that we have no sin, we fool ourselves and there is no truth among us.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and fair that He release our sins, and cleanse us from every iniquity.
If we say that we haven’t sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not among us.
1 John 2:1 filioli mei haec scribo vobis ut non peccetis sed et si quis peccaverit advocatum habemus apud Patrem Iesum Christum iustum
My little children, I write this to you that you may not sin. Yet if someone sins, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ the righteous.
2:2 et ipse est propitiatio pro peccatis nostris non pro nostris autem tantum sed etiam pro totius mundi
And He is payment for our sins – not for ours only, yet even for the whole world’s.
Words and Deeds
2:3 et in hoc scimus quoniam cognovimus eum si mandata eius observemus
And we know in this that we have known Him: If we keep His commandments.
2:4 qui dicit se nosse eum et mandata eius non custodit mendax est in hoc veritas non est
Who says of himself, “I have known Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and truth is not in this.
2:5 qui autem servat verbum eius vere in hoc caritas Dei perfecta est in hoc scimus quoniam in ipso sumus
But who serves His word truly, in this God’s charity is complete. We know in this that we are in Him.
2:6 qui dicit se in ipso manere debet sicut ille ambulavit et ipse ambulare
Who says of himself, “I am in Him,” must remain so. As He walked, let him also walk.
Old and New
2:7 carissimi non mandatum novum scribo vobis sed mandatum vetus quod habuistis ab initio mandatum vetus est verbum quod audistis
Most beloved, I don’t write you a new commandment, yet an old commandment that you have had from the beginning. The word that you’ve heard is the old commandment.
2:8 iterum mandatum novum scribo vobis quod est verum et in ipso et in vobis quoniam tenebrae transeunt et lumen verum iam lucet
Again, I write you a new commandment that is true also in itself and in you: that shadows are passing and true light already shines.
2:9 qui dicit se in luce esse et fratrem suum odit in tenebris est usque adhuc
Who says of himself, “I am in light,” and hates his brother, is in shadows even to now.
2:10 qui diligit fratrem suum in lumine manet et scandalum in eo non est
Who delights in his brother remains in light, and there is no scandal in him.
2:11 qui autem odit fratrem suum in tenebris est et in tenebris ambulat et nescit quo eat quoniam tenebrae obcaecaverunt oculos eius
But who hates his brother is in shadows, and walks in shadows, and does not know where he goes, because shadows have blinded his eyes.
Sins Are Forgiven You
2:12 scribo vobis filioli quoniam remittuntur vobis peccata propter nomen eius
I write you, little children, because sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.
2:13 scribo vobis patres quoniam cognovistis eum qui ab initio est scribo vobis adulescentes quoniam vicistis malignum
I write you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write you, youths, because you have defeated the malignant one.
2:14 scripsi vobis infantes quoniam cognovistis Patrem scripsi vobis patres quia cognovistis eum qui ab initio scripsi vobis adulescentes quia fortes estis et verbum Dei in vobis manet et vicistis malignum
I’ve written you, infants, because you have known the Father. I’ve written you, fathers, because you’ve known Him who is from the beginning. I’ve written you, youths, because you are strong, and God’s word remains among you, and you’ve defeated the malignant one.
Don’t Delight In the World
2:15 nolite diligere mundum neque ea quae in mundo sunt si quis diligit mundum non est caritas Patris in eo
Don’t delight in the world, or in those that are in the world! If someone delights in the world, the Father’s charity is not in him –
2:16 quoniam omne quod est in mundo concupiscentia carnis et concupiscentia oculorum est et superbia vitae quae non est ex Patre sed ex mundo est
for all that is in the world is the body’s lust, and the eyes’ lust, and life’s pride, which is not from the Father, but is from the world.
2:17 et mundus transit et concupiscentia eius qui autem facit voluntatem Dei manet in aeternum
And the world passes away and its lusts, but who works God’s will remains in eternity.
Antichrists
2:18 filioli novissima hora est et sicut audistis quia antichristus venit nunc antichristi multi facti sunt unde scimus quoniam novissima hora est
Little children, it is the last hour and, as you have heard that antichrist is coming, now many antichrists have come. From this, we know that it is the last hour.
2:19 ex nobis prodierunt sed non erant ex nobis nam si fuissent ex nobis permansissent utique nobiscum sed ut manifesti sint quoniam non sunt omnes ex nobis
They have gone out from us, yet they were not from us. For if they had been from us, they certainly would have remained with us – yet so it may be clear that not all are from us.
2:20 sed vos unctionem habetis a Sancto et nostis omnia
Yet you have an anointing from the Holy, and you’ve known all.
Who Is a Liar?
2:21 non scripsi vobis quasi ignorantibus veritatem sed quasi scientibus eam et quoniam omne mendacium ex veritate non est
I haven’t written you as if to those not knowing the truth, but as those knowing her, and knowing that every lie is not from truth.
2:22 quis est mendax nisi is qui negat quoniam Iesus non est Christus hic est antichristus qui negat Patrem et Filium
Who is a liar except him who denies that Jesus is Christ? This is antichrist, who denies Father and Son.
2:23 omnis qui negat Filium nec Patrem habet qui confitetur Filium et Patrem habet
Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father. Who confesses the Son has the Father also.

His Anointing In You
2:26 haec scripsi vobis de eis qui seducunt vos
I’ve written you this about those who seduce you.
2:27 et vos unctionem quam accepistis ab eo manet in vobis et non necesse habetis ut aliquis doceat vos sed sicut unctio eius docet vos de omnibus et verum est et non est mendacium et sicut docuit vos manete in eo
And you – the anointing that you’ve received from Him remains among you, and you have no need that another teach you. Yet, as His anointing teaches you about all, and is true, and is no lie, and as it has taught you, remain in it!
Born From Him
2:28 et nunc filioli manete in eo ut cum apparuerit habeamus fiduciam et non confundamur ab eo in adventu eius
And now, little children, remain in Him! And when He appears, let us have confidence, and let us not be confounded by Him at His coming.
2:29 si scitis quoniam iustus est scitote quoniam et omnis qui facit iustitiam ex ipso natus est
If you know that He is righteous, know also that everyone who works righteousness is born from Him.
Chapter Three
When He Appears
1 John 3:1 videte qualem caritatem dedit nobis Pater ut filii Dei nominemur et sumus propter hoc mundus non novit nos quia non novit eum
See what sort of care the Father has given us, that we should be called God’s children – and we are! For this reason, the world hasn’t known us, because it didn’t know Him.
3:2 carissimi nunc filii Dei sumus et nondum apparuit quid erimus scimus quoniam cum apparuerit similes ei erimus quoniam videbimus eum sicuti est
Most beloved, now we are God’s children, and what we will be has not yet appeared. We know that when He appears we will be like him, because we will see Him as He is.
3:3 et omnis qui habet spem hanc in eo sanctificat se sicut et ille sanctus est
And everyone who has this hope in Him makes himself holy, as He also is holy.
Iniquity Is Sin
3:4 omnis qui facit peccatum et iniquitatem facit et peccatum est iniquitas
Everyone who works sin also works iniquity, and iniquity is sin.
3:5 et scitis quoniam ille apparuit ut peccata tolleret et peccatum in eo non est
And you know that He appeared so He could take away sin, and there is no sin in Him.
3:6 omnis qui in eo manet non peccat omnis qui peccat non vidit eum nec cognovit eum
Everyone who remains in Him does not sin. Everyone who sins has neither seen nor known Him.
Let No One Seduce You
3:7 filioli nemo vos seducat qui facit iustitiam iustus est sicut et ille iustus est
Little children, let no one seduce you! Who works righteousness is righteous, as He also is righteous.
3:8 qui facit peccatum ex diabolo est quoniam ab initio diabolus peccat in hoc apparuit Filius Dei ut dissolvat opera diaboli
Who works sin is from the devil, because the devil sins from the beginning. God’s Son has appeared in this, that He may dissolve the devil’s works.
3:9 omnis qui natus est ex Deo peccatum non facit quoniam semen ipsius in eo manet et non potest peccare quoniam ex Deo natus est
Everyone who is born from God does not work sin, because His seed remains in him. And he cannot sin because he is born from God.
God’s Children and the Devil’s Children
3:10 in hoc manifesti sunt filii Dei et filii diaboli omnis qui non est iustus non est de Deo et qui non diligit fratrem suum
God’s children and the devil’s children are made known in this. Who isn’t righteous isn’t from God, and who doesn’t delight in his brother –
3:11 quoniam haec est adnuntiatio quam audistis ab initio ut diligamus alterutrum
for this is the announcement that you’ve heard from the beginning, that we delight in each other –
3:12 non sicut Cain ex maligno erat et occidit fratrem suum et propter quid occidit eum quoniam opera eius maligna erant fratris autem eius iusta
not like Cain. He was from the malignant one, and he murdered his brother. Why did he murder him? Because his works were malignant, but his brother’s were right.
Don’t Wonder
3:13 nolite mirari fratres si odit vos mundus
Don’t wonder, brothers, if the world hates you.
3:14 nos scimus quoniam translati sumus de morte in vitam quoniam diligimus fratres qui non diligit manet in morte
We know that we have been transplanted from death to life, because we’ve delighted in the brothers. Who does not delight remains in death.
3:15 omnis qui odit fratrem suum homicida est et scitis quoniam omnis homicida non habet vitam aeternam in se manentem
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and we know that every murderer does not have eternal life remaining in him.
3:16 in hoc cognovimus caritatem quoniam ille pro nobis animam suam posuit et nos debemus pro fratribus animas ponere
We’ve known charity in this, that He set down His soul for us, and we ought to set down our souls for the brothers.
Love’s Measure
3:17 qui habuerit substantiam mundi et viderit fratrem suum necesse habere et clauserit viscera sua ab eo quomodo caritas Dei manet in eo
Who has the world’s wealth, and sees his brother having need, and closes his guts against him – how does God’s charity remain in him?
3:18 filioli non diligamus verbo nec lingua sed opere et veritate
Little children, let us not delight in word or tongue, but in work and truth.
3:10 in hoc cognoscimus quoniam ex veritate sumus et in conspectu eius suadeamus corda nostra
We’ve known in this that we are from the truth, and let us persuade our hearts in His sight.
3:20 quoniam si reprehenderit nos cor maior est Deus corde nostro et novit omnia
For if our heart accuses us, God is greater than our heart, and has known all.
3:21 carissimi si cor non reprehenderit nos fiduciam habemus ad Deum
Most beloved, if our heart does not accuse, we have confidence toward God.
3:22 et quodcumque petierimus accipiemus ab eo quoniam mandata eius custodimus et ea quae sunt placita coram eo facimus
And whatever we ask, we will receive from Him, because we keep His commandments, and we do those acts that are pleasing before Him.
3:23 et hoc est mandatum eius ut credamus in nomine Filii eius Iesu Christi et diligamus alterutrum sicut dedit mandatum nobis
And this is His commandment: that we believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we delight in each other, as He gave us the command.
3:24 et qui servat mandata eius in illo manet et ipse in eo et in hoc scimus quoniam manet in nobis de Spiritu quem nobis dedit
And who serves His commandments remains in Him, and He in them. And we know in this that He remains among us: from the Spirit whom He has given us.
Chapter Four
Test Spirits
1 John 4:1 carissimi nolite omni spiritui credere sed probate spiritus si ex Deo sint quoniam multi pseudoprophetae exierunt in mundum
Most beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test spirits, if they be from God – for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
4:2 in hoc cognoscitur Spiritus Dei omnis spiritus qui confitetur Iesum Christum in carne venisse ex Deo est
God’s Spirit is known in this: Every spirit who confesses Jesus Christ has come in flesh is from God,
4:3 et omnis spiritus qui solvit Iesum ex Deo non est et hoc est antichristi quod audistis quoniam venit et nunc iam in mundo est
and every spirit who lets Jesus go is not from God. And this is of antichrist that you’ve heard, for he is coming, and already now is in the world.
4:4 vos ex Deo estis filioli et vicistis eos quoniam maior est qui in vobis est quam qui in mundo
You are from God, little children, and you’ve overcome them, because who is among you is greater than who is in the world.
4:5 ipsi de mundo sunt ideo de mundo loquuntur et mundus eos audit
They are from the world. Therefore, they speak of the world, and the world hears them.
4:6 nos ex Deo sumus qui novit Deum audit nos qui non est ex Deo non audit nos in hoc cognoscimus Spiritum veritatis et spiritum erroris
We are from God. Who has known God hears us. Who is not from God does not hear us. We know in this truth’s Spirit and error’s spirit.
Let Us Delight
4:7 carissimi diligamus invicem quoniam caritas ex Deo est et omnis qui diligit ex Deo
natus est et cognoscit Deum
Most beloved, let us delight in one another, for love is from God, and everyone who delights is born from God and knows God.
4:8 qui non diligit non novit Deum quoniam Deus caritas est
Who does not delight hasn’t known God, for God is love.
God’s Love
4:9 in hoc apparuit caritas Dei in nobis quoniam Filium suum unigenitum misit Deus in mundum ut vivamus per eum
God’s love has appeared among us in this, that God sent His only-born Son into the world – that we may live through Him.
4:10 in hoc est caritas non quasi nos dilexerimus Deum sed quoniam ipse dilexit nos et misit Filium suum propitiationem pro peccatis nostris
Love is in this: not as if we’ve delighted in God, but that He delighted in us, and sent His Son as payment for our sins.
4:11 carissimi si sic Deus dilexit nos et nos debemus alterutrum diligere
Most beloved, if God delighted so in us, we also ought to delight in one another.
No One Has Ever Seen God
4:12 Deum nemo vidit umquam si diligamus invicem Deus in nobis manet et caritas eius in nobis perfecta est
No one has ever seen God. If we delight in one other, God remains among us, and His love is completed among us.
4:13 in hoc intellegimus quoniam in eo manemus et ipse in nobis quoniam de Spiritu suo dedit nobis
We understand in this that we are remaining in Him, and He among us, for He’s given us from His Spirit.
4:14 et nos vidimus et testificamur quoniam Pater misit Filium salvatorem mundi
And we’ve seen and bear witness that the Father sent the Son as the world’s securer.
4:15 quisque confessus fuerit quoniam Iesus est Filius Dei Deus in eo manet et ipse in Deo
Whoever will confess that Jesus is God’s Son, God remains in him and he in God.
4:16 et nos cognovimus et credidimus caritati quam habet Deus in nobis Deus caritas est et qui manet in caritate in Deo manet et Deus in eo
And we’ve known and believed the love that God has among us. God is love, and who remains in love remains in God, and God in him.
Love Is Perfected
4:17 in hoc perfecta est caritas nobiscum ut fiduciam habeamus in die iudicii quia sicut ille est et nos sumus in hoc mundo
Love is perfected among us in this, that we may have confidence on judgment day – for as He is, we are also in this world.
4:18 timor non est in caritate sed perfecta caritas foras mittit timorem quoniam timor poenam habet qui autem timet non est perfectus in caritate
There is no fear in love, yet complete love throws fear out, for fear has punishment. Yet who fears is not complete in love.
4:19 nos ergo diligamus quoniam Deus prior dilexit nos
Let us delight, therefore, because God first delighted in us.
4:20 si quis dixerit quoniam diligo Deum et fratrem suum oderit mendax est qui enim non diligit fratrem suum quem vidit Deum quem non vidit quomodo potest diligere
If someone says that “I delight in God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar. For who does not delight in his brother whom he’s seen, how can he delight in God whom he hasn’t seen?
4:21 et hoc mandatum habemus ab eo ut qui diligit Deum diligat et fratrem suum
And we have this commandment from Him, that who delights in God may delight also in his brother.
Chapter Five
Everyone Who Believes
1 John 5:1 omnis qui credit quoniam Iesus est Christus ex Deo natus est et omnis qui diligit eum qui genuit diligit eum qui natus est ex eo
Everyone who believes that Jesus is Christ is born from God. And everyone who delights in Him who birthed, delights in Him who was born from Him.
5:2 in hoc cognoscimus quoniam diligimus natos Dei cum Deum diligamus et mandata eius faciamus
We know in this that we delight in those born of God: when we delight in God and we do His commandments.
God’s Love
5:3 haec est enim caritas Dei ut mandata eius custodiamus et mandata eius gravia non sunt
For this is God’s love: that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not heavy –
5:4 quoniam omne quod natum est ex Deo vincit mundum et haec est victoria quae vincit mundum fides nostra
for all that is born from God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world: our faith.
Who Overcomes?
5:5 quis est qui vincit mundum nisi qui credit quoniam Iesus est Filius Dei
Who is it who overcomes the world if not one who believes that Jesus is God’s Son?
5:6 hic est qui venit per aquam et sanguinem Iesus Christus non in aqua solum sed in aqua et sanguine et Spiritus est qui testificatur quoniam Christus est veritas
This is who comes through water and blood – Jesus Christ – not in water alone, but in water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness that Christ is true,
5:7 quia tres sunt qui testimonium dant
for there are three who give testimony:
5:8 Spiritus et aqua et sanguis et tres unum sunt
Spirit, and water, and blood, and the three are one.
If We Accept Human Testimony
5:9 si testimonium hominum accipimus testimonium Dei maius est quoniam hoc est testimonium Dei quod maius est quia testificatus est de Filio suo
If we accept human testimony, God’s testimony is better, for this is God’s testimony that is best –that He has borne witness about His Son.
5:10 qui credit in Filio Dei habet testimonium Dei in se qui non credit Filio mendacem facit eum quoniam non credidit in testimonio quod testificatus est Deus de Filio suo
Who believes in God’s Son has God’s testimony in him. Who does not believe the Son makes Him a liar, because he hasn’t believed in testimony that God has borne witness to about His Son.
5:11 et hoc est testimonium quoniam vitam aeternam dedit nobis Deus et haec vita in Filio eius est
And this is the witness: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
5:12 qui habet Filium habet vitam qui non habet Filium Dei vitam non habet
Who has the Son has life. Who does not have the Son, does not have life.
That You May Know
5:13 haec scripsi vobis ut sciatis quoniam vitam habetis aeternam qui creditis in nomine Filii Dei
I’ve written you this so you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of God’s Son.
5:14 et haec est fiducia quam habemus ad eum quia quodcumque petierimus secundum voluntatem eius audit nos
And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that whatever we ask according to His will, He hears us.
5:15 et scimus quoniam audit nos quicquid petierimus scimus quoniam habemus petitiones quas postulavimus ab eo
And we know that He hears us, whatever we ask. We know that we have the petitions that we’ve asked from Him.
A Sin To Death
5:16 qui scit fratrem suum peccare peccatum non ad mortem petet et dabit ei vitam peccantibus non ad mortem est peccatum ad mortem non pro illo dico ut roget
Who knows his brother to sin a sin not to death, let him ask, and He will give life to those sinning not to death. There is a sin to death. I’m not saying that he should pray for that.
5:17 omnis iniquitas peccatum est et est peccatum non ad mortem
All iniquity is sin, and there is a sin not to death.
5:18 scimus quoniam omnis qui natus est ex Deo non peccat sed generatio Dei conservat eum et malignus non tangit eum
We know that everyone who is born from God does not sin, yet God’s generation preserves him, and the malignant one does not touch him.
5:19 scimus quoniam ex Deo sumus et mundus totus in maligno positus est
We know that we are from God, and the whole world is placed in the malignant one.
5:20 et scimus quoniam Filius Dei venit et dedit nobis sensum ut cognoscamus verum Deum et simus in vero Filio eius hic est verus Deus et vita aeterna
And we know that God’s Son is coming, and He’s given us sense so we may know the true God, and be in His true Son. This is the true God and eternal life.
5:21 filioli custodite vos a simulacris
Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
II John
Salutation
2 John 1:1 senior electae dominae et natis eius quos ego diligo in veritate et non ego solus sed et omnes qui cognoverunt veritatem
The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who’ve known truth –
1:2 propter veritatem quae permanet in nobis et nobiscum erit in aeternum
because of the truth that remains among us, and will be with us in eternity.
1:3 sit nobiscum gratia misericordia pax a Deo Patre et a Christo Iesu Filio Patris in veritate et caritate
Grace, mercy, peace be with us, from God the Father and Christ Jesus, the Father’s Son, in truth and in love.
Remember the Commandment
1:4 gavisus sum valde quoniam inveni de filiis tuis ambulantes in veritate sicut mandatum accepimus a Patre
I was very glad that I found some of your children walking in truth, as we’ve received the commandment from the Father.
1:5 et nunc rogo te domina non tamquam mandatum novum scribens tibi sed quod habuimus ab initio ut diligamus alterutrum
And now, I pray you, lady, not as if writing you a new commandment, yet what we’ve had from the beginning: that we delight in one another.
1:6 et haec est caritas ut ambulemus secundum mandata eius hoc mandatum est ut quemadmodum audistis ab initio in eo ambuletis
And this is love: that we walk according to His commandments. This is the
commandment that, just as you’ve heard from the beginning, you may walk in it.
Many Seducers
1:7 quoniam multi seductores exierunt in mundum qui non confitentur Iesum Christum venientem in carne hic est seductor et antichristus
For many seducers have gone out into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ coming in the flesh. This is the seducer and antichrist.
1:8 videte vosmet ipsos ne perdatis quae operati estis sed ut mercedem plenam accipiatis
See to yourselves that you not lose what you’ve done, but that you receive a full reward!
1:9 omnis qui praecedit et non manet in doctrina Christi Deum non habet qui permanet in doctrina hic et Filium et Patrem habet
Everyone who goes beyond and does not remain in Christ’s teaching, does not have God. Who remains in the teaching, he has also the Son and the Father.
Don’t Receive Them
1:10 si quis venit ad vos et hanc doctrinam non adfert nolite recipere eum in domum nec have ei dixeritis
If someone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, don’t receive him into the house or speak a greeting to him –
1:11 qui enim dicit illi have communicat operibus illius malignis
for who says “Welcome” to him shares his harmful works!

Most beloved, I make prayer about all, that you may come in prosperously and be strengthened – as your soul carries on prosperously.
1:3 gavisus sum valde venientibus fratribus et testimonium perhibentibus veritati tuae sicut tu in veritate ambulas
I was very glad, the brothers coming and bearing witness to your truth as you walk in truth.
1:4 maiorem horum non habeo gratiam quam ut audiam filios meos in veritate ambulantes
I have no greater grace than these: that I may hear of my children walking in truth.
1:5 carissime fideliter facis quicquid operaris in fratres et hoc in peregrinos
Most beloved, you are working faithfully in whatever you do among the brothers. This also do among strangers,
1:6 qui testimonium reddiderunt caritati tuae in conspectu ecclesiae quos bene facies deducens digne Deo

Beware of Diotrepes
1:9 scripsissem forsitan ecclesiae sed is qui amat primatum gerere in eis Diotrepes non recipit nos
I had written perhaps to the gathering, yet Diotrepes, who loves to carry on in first place among them, does not receive us.
1:10 propter hoc si venero commoneam eius opera quae facit verbis malignis garriens in nos et quasi non ei ista sufficiant nec ipse suscipit fratres et eos qui cupiunt prohibet et de ecclesia eicit
